Trend Scouting Report: The Jumpsuit

Updated: Apr 25, 2019

For our Trend Scouting report, my group and I decided to check out some of the shops on Newbury Street to see what has been selling this season. The first store we went into was TJ Maxx and as soon as we walked into the women's clothing section we were met with multiple racks of jumpsuits. My group and I thought this was a very unique and versatile trend so we decided to look further into how other stores were selling it.

The jumpsuits are TJ Maxx were your standard tanktop cut with a cinched-in waist. They were more muted tones with some patterned jumpsuits as well. These garments would be more suited for an older audience, such as women in their late twenties to mid-forties. Since TJ Maxx sells name brands from past seasons at a discounted price, I wasn't surprised that these jumpsuits were a little behind on the trends, although they were reasonably priced ranging from $30-$50.

The next store we went into was Urban Outfitters. Unlike TJ Maxx, UO is targeting a younger demographic, ages 15-25. The first floor was their newer items, inspired by festival season. On this floor was one jumpsuit that was also a standard tanktop style but in a rusty red color and covered in bright sunflowers. While the cut was still pretty standard, the color and pattern were very on trend for this season. Upstairs there was more clothing, although the layout was less cohesive than downstairs. On one rack we saw some more formal jumpsuits made from satin with a deep v cut, and wide, open legs. This was an example of a more formal take on the trend, which we believe we will see more of at upcoming proms, weddings and other formal events.

After that, we stopped at Forever21 to see a lower priced brands take on this trend. Since Forever21 has a wide variety of styles available, there were many different takes on the jumpsuit. One of the more trendy ones we saw was a metallic silver, athleisure inspired jumpsuit. Right now bike shorts are very popular and we think this type of jumpsuit will be a continuation from that trend. Another jumpsuit we saw was more flowy, bohemian style. It was a strapless garment with tassel accents in a bright mustard yellow, which has been seen in both fall and spring fashion this year. These jumpsuits were the least expensive ranging from $20-$25.

The last two stores we looked in were smaller boutiques on Newbury Street, because we wanted a good variety in our trend report. The first one we went to was called Lipstick, they had a jumpsuit out on display on a mannequin as some mixed in around the store. Lipstick's product assortment was more casual but were the highest priced, ranging from $70-$150.

The last store we went into was Bobbles and Lace, which also had jumpsuits on display as well as mixed in around the store. Of all the stores we went into, they had the most variety. One jumpsuit that caught our eye was this blush garment, displayed on a mannequin in the corner of the store. This jumpsuit was the most innovative piece we saw, which appeared to be a jumpsuit/ overall hybrid. I liked how unique this piece was compared to other jumpsuits we saw and how it could be dressed up or down depending on what you put under it.

While different styles of jumpsuits may be trending at different times, we definitely think that the overall concept is here to stay, Jumpsuits are widely available, sold at many different stores, in many different sizes, styles and prices. They are easy to thrown on, less restrictive than dresses and can be dressed up or down. Although some people may have trouble styling them because they are one garment and not tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched. However, we do think the majority of consumers will adopt this trend in one way or another.
